Popular Dog Breeds in South Africa

    0
By Victor Reuben on July 14, 2025 Doggy Pick

There’s something special about dog life in South Africa. Wide open spaces. Hot days. Backyard braais with a tail-wagging shadow nearby, waiting for something to fall.

But when it comes to picking the right dog for this kind of lifestyle, it’s not as simple as just grabbing the cutest pup you see on the internet.

Climate, space, temperament, it all matters. And some breeds are just better suited to South African living.

Let’s talk about the ones that have been here the longest. The OGs of the bushveld.

    The Africanis

You’ve seen them. Sleek, short-haired, always alert. The Africanis is one of South Africa’s most native dogs. These dogs have been around forever, living side-by-side with people across rural communities and kraals.

They aren’t fancy, but man, they’re clever. No nonsense. They don’t need plush beds or gourmet kibble. Just a bit of shade, clean water, and they’re good to go. Hardy as heck and loyal with the right family.

And they don’t bark for the sake of it. When an Africanis makes a noise, it’s usually for a reason.

    Boerboel

Now if you’ve got space, and we mean proper space, not a townhouse courtyard, the Boerboel might catch your eye. This dog is built like a tank, bred for guarding farms and families.

They’re mellow with their people but take their job seriously. No chancers sneaking past the gate on their watch.

But don’t let the bulk fool you. Boerboels are softies at heart when it comes to their humans. Just know they need early socialising. And respect. They aren’t the kind of dog you boss around. They’ll protect your kids and cuddle with you on the couch, if they fit.

    Rhodesian Ridgeback

Ridgebacks didn’t start in SA, but they made their name here. Originally bred in Zimbabwe to help track lions, these dogs are lean, quick, and sharp.

That ridge down the back? Pure style. That stamina? Unreal. Ridgebacks are perfect for folks who love hiking or live somewhere with space to roam.

They aren’t big on strangers, and they’re not fussed with constant cuddles. But they are deeply bonded to their family. Independent, a bit stubborn, but loyal to the core.

    German Shepherd

Shepherds are big in South Africa. Maybe it’s the intelligence. Or the versatility. You’ll see them working security, guiding, herding, and being family pets all across the country.

But they need more than just a yard and a chew toy. These dogs want a job. They want to learn. Otherwise, they get bored and start making their own fun, usually in ways that involve destroyed sprinklers or escape missions.

Good in cooler parts of the country, but they do alright in the heat if they’ve got shade and water.

    Labrador Retriever

Let’s be honest. Labs are everywhere. Friendly, goofy, always ready to chase a ball, whether you want to throw one or not.

They fit well into suburban homes, love a good swim, and generally get along with other dogs and kids. But they’re not just dopey clowns. Labs are smart and trainable, they just hide it behind that big smile.

They can struggle in high heat though, especially the chunkier ones. So keep the water bowl full and avoid midday walks in the Lowveld sun.

    Yorkies, Dachshunds and Small Breeds

You’d think small dogs wouldn’t stand a chance in a land full of Boerboels and Ridgebacks. But actually, they thrive. Especially in cities or homes with little outdoor space.

Yorkies, Dachshunds, Maltese, these little guys have a big fan base in Jozi flats and Cape Town apartments.

But don’t be fooled by size. Some of them bark like they’re ten feet tall. And they often come with more attitude than the big dogs. It’s cute until they think they’re the boss of the whole house.

    Climate and Space Matter, Hey

This isn’t Europe. South African summers are proper warm, and our winters can surprise you in the highveld. So you’ve got to think about what your dog’s coat can handle.

Long-haired, thick-coated dogs might look majestic, but they often overheat. Same goes for snub-nosed breeds like Bulldogs or Pugs, they struggle with the heat and can battle to breathe on hot days.

If you live in a complex or somewhere with security estates, make sure you check breed rules. Some places get funny about what they allow.

And let’s not forget about the snakes, ticks, and mozzies. Country dogs need regular checks and proper protection. That fluffy white coat? Might not be so white after a week of farm life.

    Last Bark

South Africa has a wild mix of dog breeds, from the proudly local Africanis to imported pups that have found their place here. But not every breed is built for every lifestyle.

So do your homework. Think about the space, the weather, and how much time you’ve actually got for training and exercise. There’s a dog out there that’ll slot right into your world, if you pick with heart and sense.
